Taxonomy/phylogeny:
Mycobacterium avium  
About 175 species have been described within genus Mycobacterium and this genus is closely related to Rhodococcus, Nocardia and Corynebacterium. M. avium subsp. avium is, as the name implies, very closely related to M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis.
