Taxonomy/phylogeny:

About 30 different species have been described within the genus Treponema. There are different opinions among researchers about which should be regarded as separate species or only as subspecies of a certain species. T. phagedenis subsp. vaccae is closely related to Treponema phagedenis subsp. phagedenis and some researchers regard them as a single species. See the phylogenetic tree (Fig. 139:2).
Comment: | Note that the species name has not yet been officially approved. The organism should, therefore, be called Treponema sp. or "Treponema phagedenis subsp. vaccae" for the moment. The organism has also been named "Treponema bovis". Other bacteria are possibly also needed for development of the disease.
