Species/Subspecies: Borrelia theileri

Etymology: Genus name: named after the French bacteriologist Amédée Borrel (1867-1936).
Species epithet: named after the Swiss veterinarian Arnold Theiler, who is regarded as the father of veterinary medicine in South Africa.
Significance:Borrelia theileri is more important in tropical countries than in Sweden.

Type Strain: There is no defined culture of this species.
Macromorphology (smell):
Micromorphology: Borrelia spp. have a planar flat-wave morphology.

Vector: African blue tick (Ripicephalus decoloratus) and some other closely related tick species.
Disease:Bovine borreliosis
Hosts: Ruminants and horse.

About 40 species have been described within genus Borrelia and the species that have been included in VetBact form two monophyletic clusters. See Fig. 233:1.
