Veterinary bacteriology: information about important bacteria
Veterinary bacteriology

Species/Subspecies: Campylobacter coli
Categories: Zoonotic; motile; notifiable diseases and bacteria
Etymology: Genus name: a curved rod.
Species epithet: of the colon.
Significance:  [Very important]
Alternative Species Name(s):Vibrio coli
Type Strain: ATCC 33559 = CCUG 11283 och 14540 = NCTC 11366.
Macromorphology (smell):
Non-hemolytic, greyish and slightly pink small colonies (1-2 mm in diameter) with a metallic sheen on blood-containing agars.
The colonies can be larger and spread out to a continuous film and swarm on moist agar
Micromorphology: Curved ("seagull wing-like") or helical small and motile rods (0.2-0.3 x 1.5-5.0 microns).
Gram +/Gram -:G-
Metabolism: Microaerophilic
Other Enzymes: Hippuricase - (= hippurat -), urease -
Biochemical Tests: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) +
Fermentation of carbohydrates: Campylobacter spp. can neither ferment nor oxidize carbohydrates.
Spec. Char.: Thermotolerant, can grow at temperatures up to 42-43°C. Does not grow at 25°C.
Special Media:
Campylobacter coli
On charcoal-based media the campylobacter colonies are greyish to white with a metallic sheen.
The colonies can be larger and spread out to a continuous film and swarm on moist agar
Reservoir: Birds and mammals (not humans)
HostsDiseaseClinical picture
HumansCampylobacterios, zoonotic disease Food poisoning, with diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever
Diagnostics:Direct culture on selective media or culture after selective enrichment. Confirmation by MALDI-TOF, PCR or other molecular methods. Biochemical tests can also be used for confirmation.
Genome Sequence:
Acc-noStrainSize (bp)Genome

16S rRNA Seq.:
Acc-noStrainNumber of NTOperon

About 40 species have been described within in the genus Campylobacter and some of these are further divided into subspecies. This genus is closely related to the following genera: Sulfurospirillum, Arcobacter and Helicobacter. C. coli is closely related to C.jejuni, C. hyointestinalis, C. fetus and C. lari.

Findings of thermotolerant Campylobacter in broiler are in Sweden notifiable to the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the County Administrative Board.

In Sweden, human campylobacteriosis is notifiable to the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

Dissertation with bacteriological connection

On Friday, November 24, at 09:15 Madeleine Moazzami defends her thesis with the title: "Foodborne bacteria in slaughterhouses with focus on cleaning and disinfection". The defense takes place in Lennart Kennes hall, BioCentrum, campus Ultuna. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
